Description

Longworth, Alice Roosevelt. Crowded Hours: Reminiscences of Alice Roosevelt Longworth. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933. First edition, first printing, with the Scribner "A" and Scribner Press seal on the copyright page. Octavo, publisher's rose cloth with gilt and green cover design, spine lettered "Scribners." No dust jacket.

INSCRIBED by the author on the front free endpaper, in ink, in a single hand: "Alexander, Oct. 1933. A great deal of love dear Grace - from Alice." It is dated the month of publication. A printed address label in the upper corner reads "Mrs. Quentin Roosevelt, Old Orchard, Oyster Bay, N.Y." This is Frances Webb Roosevelt, wife of Theodore Roosevelt's grandson Quentin Roosevelt II. Old Orchard was the Oyster Bay home of Theodore Roosevelt Jr. and his family. The recipient appears to be Alice's niece Grace Roosevelt (1911-1994), daughter of Theodore Roosevelt Jr. and sister of Quentin II, which would explain how the book stayed in the family at Old Orchard. The meaning of the opening word "Alexander" is not certain; it may refer to Grace's mother, Eleanor Butler Alexander Roosevelt.

The famously sharp-tongued "Princess Alice" was TR's eldest daughter, and her memoir is the classic insider's account of the Roosevelt White House and Washington society. A family presentation copy with a continuous Roosevelt provenance.

Condition: spine sunned to tan with dulled gilt; light wear and fraying to spine ends and corners; boards with light soiling. A good copy.
